Consumer Alert: Salmonella in Dry Fermented Sausage
New York, NY - July 19, 2002 - New York State Agriculture Commissioner Nathan
L. Rudgers today warned consumers not to consume Dry Fermented Sausage manufactured
by Zhang Charn Meat Market Co., Inc., 135-137 Mott Street, New York, New York
10013 because of the presence of Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which
can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or
elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which
may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances,
infection with Salmonella can result in the organism entering the bloodstream
and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected
aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets food
inspectors revealed the presence of Salmonella. The Dry Fermented Sausage was
sold in the New York City area in uncoded, plastic bags. No illnesses have been
reported to date.
Consumer's who have purchased the Dry Fermented Sausage from Zhang Charn Meat
Market Co., Inc. should discard it or return it to the point of purchase.
