Sagsveen & Sagsveen Issues Allergy Alert for Golden Raisins
Babylon, NY - October 21, 2002 -- Sagsveen & Sagsveen of 1 Mahan St.,
W. Babylon, NY 11704 is recalling its 10.5 ounce packages of Elizabeth's Natural
Golden Raisins because they may contain undeclared sulfur dioxide. People who
have allergies to sulfur dioxide run the risk of a serious or life-threatening
allergic reaction if they consume this product.
The product comes in a 10.5 ounce clear plastic package with an expiration
date of Sept. 30, 2003 on the lid.
The recalled Golden Raisins were distributed to only one firm: Pat's Quality
Meat Farms, 300 Fulton St., Farmindale, NY 11735.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered, through routine sampling
by a New York State Dept of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspector, that the
product contained sulfites in a container that did not declare the presence
of sulfites.
The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported
to illicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur
in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more
of sulfites.
Subsequent investigation by a New York State Dept. of Agriculture & Markets
Food Inspector indicated the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in
the company's productions and packaging processes.
Consumers who have purchased 10.5 ounce packages of the Elizabeth's Natural
Golden Raisins are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full
refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (631) 242-2044.
