Plantain Products Co. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Whey in Spicy Plantain Chips and Spice Cassava Chips

Tampa, FL - June 13, 2002 -- Plantain Products Co. of Tampa, Florida is recalling Chifles brand Spicy Plantain Chips and Spicy Cassava Chips because they may contain undeclared whey. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to whey run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Spicy Plantain Chips and Spicy Cassava Chips were distributed to retail stores in Florida, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Spicy Plantain Chips and Spicy Cassava Chips are in foil bags in 2 oz., 5 oz., 8 oz., and 4 oz. bags under the Chifles Brand and all date codes are involved through June 11, 2002.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that Spicy Plantain Chips and Spicy Cassava Chips containing whey were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of whey.

Consumers who have purchased Chifles Spicy Plantain Chips and Chifles Spicy Cassava Chips are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Plantain Products at (813) 626-9486.
