Owens Country Sausage Voluntarily Recalls Convenience Products Due to Possible Health Risk

RICHARDSON, Texas - April 17, 2002 -- Owens Country Sausage is voluntarily recalling small Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuits and Ham & Cheese Bagels after laboratory testing by the Texas Department of Health (TDH) found Listeria monocytogenes in the products. The convenience sandwiches subject to this recall are sold under the brand names of Owens or Bob Evans.

Although no illnesses have been reported to date, Owens Country Sausage is taking this voluntary action to prevent any illness or injury. Production of these products has been suspended until the company is certain that the problem has been corrected.

The Owens SnackWiches Sausage, Egg & Cheese Biscuits subject to this recall are:

24 per poly bag UPC code: 70110-00525 Sell-by: AMI 1261-2 Quantity effected: 29 cases
Four per carton UPC code: 70110-05425 Sell-by: April 19 BC2059 Quantity effected: 567 cases

The items could have been purchased at various grocery stores in the following states: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

The Bob Evans SnackWiches Ham & Cheese Bagels subject to this recall are:

Eight per carton UPC code: 75900-00758 Sell-by: May 11 CC2084 Quantity effected: 2 cases

The items could have been purchased at various grocery stores in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

These products are being recalled in cooperation with the TDH. Owens Country Sausage and Bob Evans Farms are concerned about the health of their consumers; therefore, we urge consumers to return the convenience sandwich products with the above-mentioned codes to the store where purchased for a full refund. This recall does not effect any other Bob Evans or Owens grocery products, and these products are not served in Bob Evans Restaurants nor Owens Restaurants.
