Blue and White Food Products Corp. Recalls Sabra Salads Lox Spread Because of Possible Health Risk
Astoria, NY - July 19, 2002 -- Blue and White Food Corp. of Astoria NY, is
recalling its 7 ounce plastic containers of "Sabra Salads Lox Spread (Smoked
Nova Scotia Salmon)" because they have the potential to be contaminated
with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and
sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others
with weakened immune systems. Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term
symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain
and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths
among pregnant women.
The recalled Sabra Salad Lox Spread was distributed in the NYC Metropolitan
area, in retail stores. The product comes in 7ounce plastic containers marked
with the code 090102 on the lid.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling by NYS Agriculture
and Markets Food Inspectors revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes
in some 7 ounce containers of Sabra Salad Lox Spread. Production of the product
has been suspended while the company continues their investigation as to the
source of the problem.
Consumers who have purchased 7ounce packages of Sabra Salads Lox Spread are
urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with
questions may contact the company at 718-932-9000.
