Balducci's Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Golden Raisins
New York, NY - May 2, 2002 -- Balducci's of New York, New York, is recalling
its 11 ounce packages of Balducci's
Golden Raisins because the product contains sulfites. People who have severe
sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic
reaction if they consume these products.
The recalled raisins were distributed through its Balducci's, Sutton Place
Gourmet, (Maryland, Virginia and DC locations), and Hay Day, (Scarsdale, N.Y.
and Connecticut locations) retail stores. The product is packaged in an 11-ounce,
clear plastic tub marked with UPC Code #5499606819.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered through routine sampling by
New York State Food Inspectors that the product contained sulfites and were
distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. The consumption
of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe
reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite
sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.
Consumers who have purchased the 11-ounce packages of Balducci's Golden Raisins
are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers
with questions may contact the company at 301 968 0601.
