CPSC Issues A Notice Of Violation In The Matter Of Wham-O Manufacturing Company

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 24) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today issued a notice of violation in the matter of WHAM-O Manufacturing company.

The Commission charged that WHAM-O failed to immediately inform CPSC that they had received information which reasonably supported the conclusion that certain WHAM-O products contained a defect which could create a substantial product hazard.

The Commission assessed a proposed civil penalty in the amount of $125,000 in this case, which involved WHAM-O's Power-master Crossbow, model nos. 106 and 108 (rifle), and Powermaster Pistol Crossbow, model no. 718 (pistol).

The Company will be given the opportunity to negotiate a settlement, and failing to do so, the case will be tried before an Administrative Law Judge under the Commission's new rules for expedited civil penalty proceedings under the Consumer Product Safety Act.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission protects the public from unreasonable risk of injury or death from 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury and for information on CPSC's fax-on-demand service, call CPSC's hotline at (800) 638-2772 or CPSC's teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270.
